Lot 2933
Constantine I, 307/310-337. Follis (Bronze, 18 mm, 2.11 g, 6 h), a contemporary imitation of an issue from Arelate. Irregular mint, after 324. CONSTAN-TINVS AVG Laureate head of Constantine I to right. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG / T✱AR Camp gate with no doors and four turrets; above, star. Cf. RIC 264 (for prototype). Slightly rough and the reverse a bit weak, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. L. Ramskold, formed since 1969.

The coin's style clearly indicates it is an unofficial contemporary 'barbarous' imitation. It resembles RIC 264 (Arelate) but originates from officina T, which is not listed and typically reserved for the Caesars. The portrait follows a Treveran style, which contrasts with Arelate's usual depiction. Additionally, the row of dots on the camp gate is a feature absent from official emissions. The reverse matches another coin - Failmetzger 2002, pl. 24, 353ACI - depicting Constantine I with bust B5.
